In recent years, the global priority to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has intensified. As nations worldwide strive to transition to a low-carbon economy, Japan has emerged as a trailblazer in this endeavor, demonstrating its steadfast commitment to achieving carbon neutrality.
One of the key milestones in this commitment was the announcement made by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga in October 2020, which signalled a transformative shift in Japan's energy and environmental policies. This led to the development of the Green Growth Strategy, an ambitious roadmap that encompasses a wide range of initiatives across various sectors of the economy and highlights Japan's commitment to building a low-carbon society.
The Green Growth Strategy outlines 14 promising fields for sustainable growth, accompanied by action plans that address industrial and energy policy perspectives. By directing policies in key sectors such as offshore wind energy, nuclear power, shipping, and semiconductors, Japan aims to cultivate an environment that fosters innovation, investment, and collaboration. Recognizing the complexities and challenges associated with attaining carbon neutrality, the strategy emphasizes the importance of gradual transitions, feasible steps, and strong partnerships between the government and industry.
